The study aimed to develop a predictive model for identifying patients who will and will not respond to the medical management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The study used data from the Medical Therapy of Prostatic Symptoms (MTOPS) study, which included patients with BPH treated with doxazosin, finasteride, and combination therapy. Boosted support vector machines (SVMs) were selected as the most accurate models and were further refined. The study found that the boosted SVM model had an AUC of 0.698 for the entire cohort, with AUCs of 0.729 for Group 1, 0.719 for Group 2, and 0.698 for Group 3. The study concluded that using MTOPS data, they were able to develop a prediction model with an acceptable rate of discrimination of medical management success for BPH.
