Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are secreted lipid-enclosed particles that have emerged as potential biomarkers and therapeutic agents in lung disease, including bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a leading complication of preterm birth. EVs contained an abundance of the EV-enriched tetraspanins CD9, CD63, and CD81, as well as epithelial cell and immune cell markers. In addition, increases in select surface proteins on EVs are associated with gestational age and the risk of BPD. Together these data demonstrate an association between EV profile and lung development and provide a foundation for future functional classification of EVs to determine their role in cell signaling during development and harness their potential as a new therapeutic target in BPD.
