Diabetes Mellitus Linked to Respiratory Impairment in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients

A retrospective cohort study involving 1639 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and progressive muscular atrophy patients explored the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) on respiratory function. Findings revealed that ALS patients with DM exhibited an elevated risk of respiratory impairment, necessitating vigilant monitoring. Despite similar overall survival rates, the subgroup with DM experienced a shorter time to noninvasive ventilation (NIV). The study underscores the importance of early NIV intervention for ALS patients with diabetes to manage respiratory complications effectively.
