The study aimed to compare the brain responses to two methods of treating overactive bladder (OAB), peroneal electrical transcutaneous neuromodulation (peroneal eTNM®) and transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS), using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The study included 32 healthy adult female volunteers who underwent brain MRI using a 3T scanner. The results showed that both peroneal eTNM® and TTNS activated brain structures associated with neural control of bladder filling and coping with urgency. However, peroneal eTNM® induced activation in additional brain structures that play an important role in supraspinal neural control, which may contribute to its therapeutic effect in treating OAB.
