Disaggregated Nano-Hydroxyapatite (DnHAP) with Inhibitory Effects on Biofilms and Demineralization

This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects of disaggregated nano-hydroxyapatite (DnHAP) on regrown biofilms and demineralization. Different types of biofilms, including single-species, dual-species, and saliva-derived microcosm biofilms, were established and treated with DnHAP. The results demonstrated that DnHAP effectively inhibited the metabolism, lactic acid production, biomass, and water-insoluble polysaccharide production of regrown single-species and dual-species biofilms. Additionally, DnHAP treatment reduced the metabolic activity and lactic acid production in saliva-derived biofilms. Furthermore, the application of DnHAP resulted in the lowest demineralization of bovine enamel compared to other treatments. Importantly, the use of DnHAP did not alter the diversity of regrown saliva-derived microcosm biofilms. These findings suggest that DnHAP holds promise as a potential solution for managing regrown biofilms to prevent dental caries.
