A multicentre, randomized controlled trial (SPARE) across 64 hospitals has assessed the effects of the withdrawal of either infliximab or immunosuppressant therapy in patients with Crohn’s disease. Adults in steroid-free clinical remission (>6 months) on combination therapy of infliximab and immunosuppressant therapy (>8 months) were randomly assigned to either continue combination therapy, discontinue infliximab or discontinue immunosuppressants. The 2-year relapse rates were 14%, 36% and 10% in the combination group, the infliximab withdrawal group and the immunosuppressant withdrawal group, respectively.
