Distinct Hippocampal Atrophy in FEDN vs. R-MDD Linked to Genes

The study investigates the differences in hippocampal atrophy patterns between first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) and recurrent major depressive disorder (R-MDD) patients. Using MRI data from 421 patients and transcriptome maps, it was found that FEDN patients had reduced gray matter volume (GMV) in the left hippocampal tail, while R-MDD patients exhibited both decreased GMV in the hippocampal body and increased GMV in the tail. Specific genes like SYTL2 in FEDN and SORCS3 and SLIT2 in R-MDD correlated with these GMV changes, suggesting different neural and genetic mechanisms for each disorder.
