A study investigated the association between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) at the epigenetic level. Using DNA methylation data from two pregnancy cohorts, the study constructed a DNA methylation risk score (MRS) for T2DM and found it to be associated with GDM across different ancestries and GDM criteria. Additionally, the study identified specific DNA methylation marks and their related loci that are shared between GDM and T2DM, suggesting common epigenetic mechanisms underlying both conditions.
