Do survivors of borderline ovarian tumors have susceptibility to secondary primary malignancies?

This retrospective study, utilizing the SEER Program, aimed to assess the risk of second primary malignancies (SPM) in women who survived borderline ovarian tumors (BOT). The study analyzed data from 1975 to 2017; the study found that the risk of developing SPM among BOT survivors was not elevated compared to the general population. Among 3,661 BOT patients diagnosed between 1977 and 2000, 13.03% experienced SPM over a median follow-up of 19.43 years, with mucinous BOT, age over 50, and no lymph node dissection associated with higher cumulative SPM incidence. The study highlights factors influencing SPM risk in BOT survivors, differing from ovarian cancer outcomes.
