A nationwide study involving middle-aged and older adults investigated the impact of periodontitis on the association between biological aging and mortality. Phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel) was used to assess biological aging. Results showed a nonlinear relationship between PhenoAgeAccel and all-cause and cause-specific mortality. However, the association between high PhenoAgeAccel and increased all-cause mortality was stronger in individuals with moderate/severe periodontitis than those with no/mild periodontitis. The findings suggest that periodontitis may intensify the link between biological aging and mortality, emphasizing the importance of periodontal health in extending lifespan and slowing down aging.
