In a study analyzing 1394 women, early-pregnancy HbA1c levels ≥ 35mmol/mol were investigated to predict high plasma glucose concentrations in the first trimester and identify women at risk of pharmacologically treated early- or late-onset gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). While HbA1c showed limited accuracy in predicting plasma glucose levels > 90th percentile in the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), it positively correlated with plasma glucose concentrations in OGTT and effectively predicted pharmacologically treated GDM. These findings suggest HbA1c's potential for identifying high-risk women for severe GDM subtypes early in pregnancy.
