Early-onset Ocular Motor Cranial Neuropathy is a Strong Predictor of Dementia

A new study based on Korean National Health Insurance data reveals a significant link between ocular motor cranial neuropathy (OMCN) and dementia risk. Researchers followed 19,243 OMCN patients and 96,215 matched controls without OMCN, finding OMCN patients faced higher risks of Alzheimer's disease (AD), Alzheimer's with cerebrovascular disease (ACD), and vascular dementia (VaD). Notably, younger OMCN patients exhibited a stronger association with dementia, particularly Alzheimer's. This nationwide study marks the first population-based research highlighting the connection between OMCN and dementia, shedding light on potential risk factors in the younger demographic.
