
A study investigated the effects of venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) on patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). RV dysfunction is a common complication of ARDS, occurring in 20-25% of cases and 28-42% of patients requiring VV-ECMO. The study measured various parameters, including left ventricular ejection fraction, cardiac index, estimated systolic pulmonary arterial pressure, tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, RV fractional area change, RV free wall longitudinal strain, and RV FAC/SPAP ratio. The study found that VV-ECMO improved RV function and decreased pulmonary artery vasoconstriction.
