Early Stimulation for Preterm Infants: A Promising Shield Against Parental Anxiety and Depression

Early Stimulation for Preterm Infants: A Promising Shield Against Parental Anxiety and Depression

The postnatal period for parents of preterm infants often turns into an anxious or traumatic experience, leading to an increased prevalence of anxiety, postnatal depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder in mothers up to 18 months after childbirth. The study examines whether delivering tactile and kinesthetic stimulation to premature newborns affects parental anxiety and depressive symptoms. A systematic review of the past ten years of literature reveals that early parental stimulation has a positive impact, suggesting it could serve as a protective factor against anxiety and depression in this population, warranting further investigation.
