Economic Evaluation of a Nonmedical Financial Assistance Program on Missed Treatment Appointments Among Adults With Cancer

This retrospective study assesses the impact of a nonmedical financial assistance program on missed cancer treatment appointments in a Southeastern public hospital system. Analyzing patient records and employing propensity weighting, the program showed a 51% decrease in overall mean no-show proportions for radiation therapy appointments. A decision tree–based economic model estimates the program saves the health system $153 per missed appointment averted. While effective for radiation therapy, the program did not significantly impact no-show proportions for infusion chemotherapy/immunotherapy appointments.
