ECP as a Potential Treatment for Severe, Non-Responsive COVID-19 in Adults

A recent study in the Journal of Clinical Medicine explored the use of extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) as a treatment option for adult COVID-19 patients who were unresponsive to antiviral and immunomodulatory drugs. The study, conducted at a COVID-19 referral center, included seven patients with severe or critical cases. After two weeks of ECP treatment, 28.6% of patients died due to non-ECP-related causes. Among survivors, none required ICU admission or experienced radiological progression, and one patient was successfully weaned off invasive mechanical ventilation. All patients achieved clearance of SARS-CoV-2 in their blood, and immune biomarker profiling showed promising results.
