Neurophysiology links maternal and child internalizing symptoms. A study of 323 mother-child dyads found that maternal anxiety and depression at age 3 predicted right frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) in children at age 5, which then correlated with internalizing symptoms at age 7 (p < .001). FAA mediated, but did not moderate, this transmission. These findings highlight FAA as a neurophysiological marker for intergenerational mental health risks.
