A recent randomized trial in Poland and Sweden examined the effects of daily iron supplementation on psychomotor development in breastfed infants. The study involved healthy infants aged 4 to 9 months. Results, encompassing 221 infants, showed no significant difference in psychomotor, cognitive, or language development at 12 months between those who received iron supplements and those who received a placebo. Additionally, iron supplementation did not decrease the risk of iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia. These findings challenged the efficacy of low-dose iron supplementation in this demographic.
