Effect of obesity on outcomes after open laryngeal surgery including total laryngectomy: A NSQIP database analysis

This study examined the impact of obesity on outcomes following open laryngeal surgery. The researchers analyzed data from the NSQIP database on open laryngeal surgeries, focusing on total laryngectomies performed between 2005 and 2018. Out of 1865 patients, 20.1% were classified as obese. The study found that obese patients had shorter operation times and hospital stays than non-obese patients. Additionally, obesity was associated with fewer bleeding transfusions and surgical complications. However, the researchers noted that several confounders and biases could influence these findings, making it challenging to definitively conclude the presence of an obesity paradox.
