Effect of phosphodiesterase‐5 inhibition on SystEmic Right VEntricular size and function. A multicentre, double‐blind, randomized, placebo‐controlled trial: SERVE

A recent trial explored the impact of tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, on adults with congenital heart disease and systemic right ventricles. Despite encouraging findings from animal models, the trial found no clinical benefit in right ventricular function, exercise capacity, or neuro-hormonal activation. The study, involving 100 participants, utilized a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled design. Over a 3-year period, tadalafil showed no significant changes in right ventricular end-systolic volume, ejection fraction, exercise capacity, or N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide concentration compared to the placebo. The results highlight the need for further research to identify effective treatments for systemic right ventricle patients.
