Effectiveness of monovalent and bivalent mRNA boosters in preventing severe COVID-19 due to omicron BA.5 infection

This study aimed to assess the relative effectiveness of second mRNA vaccine boosters against severe COVID-19 caused by the omicron BA.5 variant. Analyzing data from individuals aged 60 or older, the study compared the protection offered by monovalent and bivalent mRNA boosters targeting different omicron strains. Results showed that the bivalent original/BA.4-5 booster exhibited the highest relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) at 50.6%, surpassing the bivalent original/BA.1 booster (rVE 49.3%) and the monovalent booster (rVE 26.9%). Notably, the bivalent original/BA.4-5 booster maintained significant protection even 4 months post-administration.
