Effects of an early transfer from incubator to a warming crib in very low birthweight preterm infants

A prospective study explored transferring very low birth weight infants (1500-1650 g) from incubators to warming cribs. The results showed that none of the infants required a return to an incubator, indicating early transfer is feasible without negative effects. The length of hospital stay for these infants was similar to a historical cohort. Although the transition increased oral feeding volume, it didn't lead to earlier discontinuation of gavage feeding. Infants in the intervention group could move to unheated cribs at a younger postmenstrual age and lower weight than the historical group. The findings suggest that early transfer to warming cribs is safe and feasible.
