A recent study investigated the effectiveness of combining extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) with isokinetic strength training (IST) to alleviate calf triceps spasms in stroke patients. The research involved 45 hemiplegic stroke patients randomly divided into three groups: a control group, an ESWT group, and an ESWT+IST group. Over four weeks, all groups received conventional rehabilitation therapy, with the ESWT and ESWT+IST groups receiving weekly ESWT sessions and four weeks of ankle IST. Results showed a significant reduction in spasms in the ESWT+IST group compared to the control group, with improved electromyography results. Peak resistive torque decreased in both ESWT groups. In conclusion, combining ESWT and IST effectively reduced calf triceps spasms in post-stroke patients.
