Band 3 protein, a Cl−/HCO−3 transporter on red blood cell surfaces, plays a crucial role in CO2 excretion. Individuals with the GP.Mur blood type, who exhibit approximately 20% higher band 3 expression, have shown a disproportionate representation in field-and-track sports. This study investigated the impact of GP.Mur/higher band 3 expressions on ventilation and gas exchange during exhaustive exercise. Elite male athletes (36.1% GP.Mur) underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing, revealing that GP.Mur athletes exhibited higher respiratory frequencies, slightly lower tidal volume, and a longer expiratory duty cycle. Consequently, their end-tidal pressure of carbon dioxide was lower, suggesting that increased band 3 activity may enhance physical performance by facilitating greater CO2 excretion.
