The 12-month longitudinal study explores the impact of sports participation and resistance training (RT) on bone mineral density (BMD) accrual in adolescent athletes. Results show significant gains in BMD for all groups except swimmers, who experienced BMD loss in the spine. Interestingly, swimmers engaged in RT exhibited higher BMD in the upper limbs and the whole body, with less head compared to swimmers without RT. Findings suggest RT may enhance BMD accrual, particularly in non-impact sports like swimming.
