Effects of Three Orthodontic Retainers on Periodontal Pathogens and Parameters

This study assessed the changes in periodontal pathogens and status after six months of wearing three orthodontic retainers: vacuum-formed retainer (VFR), Hawley retainer (HR), and lingual fixed retainer (LR). The patients with metal brackets underwent analysis for Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa). All groups showed significant decreases in Pg, Aa, gingival index (GI), plaque index (PLI), and probing depth (PD) after one month (p < 0.05). HR demonstrated superior results in Aa and Pg at six months compared to VFR and LR. The study suggested that periodontal conditions improved post-bracket removal regardless of retainer type.
