Efficacy and safety of aldosterone synthase inhibition with and without empagliflozin for chronic kidney disease

A phase 2 clinical trial on BI 690517, an aldosterone synthase inhibitor, revealed promising results in slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease. Among 586 participants, the inhibitor, in 3 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg doses, demonstrated a dose-dependent reduction in albuminuria compared to a placebo. Hyperkalaemia occurred in varying percentages across dosage groups, but most cases did not require intervention. The study suggests that BI 690517, especially in combination with empagliflozin, could be an effective and safe treatment for chronic kidney disease.
