Efficacy and safety of EGFR-TKI combined with WBRT vs. WBRT alone in the treatment of brain metastases from NSCLC

New findings suggest combining epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) with whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) significantly enhances treatment outcomes for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with brain metastases. A meta-analysis of 23 randomized controlled trials involving 2,025 patients showed that the combination therapy improved intracranial objective remission rate, disease control rate, and 1-year survival compared to WBRT alone. Additionally, the combined treatment led to a survival advantage and reduced adverse effects, particularly with less incidence of nausea, vomiting, and myelosuppression. The study concludes that EGFR-TKI combined with WBRT should be the preferred treatment for managing brain metastases in NSCLC patients, offering superior outcomes with manageable side effects.
