Gefapixant, a P2X3 receptor antagonist, has shown effectiveness in treating refractory chronic cough (RCC) and unexplained chronic cough (UCC) in two phase III trials called COUGH-1 and COUGH-2. This analysis presents patient-reported outcome (PRO) data evaluating the long-term benefits and safety of gefapixant over 52 weeks. The results show that participants receiving gefapixant 45 mg twice daily experienced clinically meaningful improvements in PROs compared to those receiving a placebo. However, taste-related adverse events were more common in the gefapixant group, leading to discontinuation in some cases. Most taste-related adverse events resolved either after discontinuation or while still receiving gefapixant. Overall, gefapixant appears to be an effective and durable treatment for RCC and UCC.
