Efficacy of DDM Lenses in Controlling Childhood Myopia: 1-Year Results

A study examined the efficacy of defocus distributed multipoint (DDM) lenses in controlling myopia progression in 168 children aged 6–13 years. Participants were randomly assigned to wear DDM or single-vision (SV) lenses. After 1 year, DDM lenses significantly reduced spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL) changes compared to SV lenses (p<0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed a higher risk of rapid myopia progression in the SV group (OR=3.51, 95% CI: 1.77 to 6.99), particularly for those wearing lenses >12 hours daily, boys, and younger children (6–9 years). The study suggests DDM lenses effectively retard myopia progression, with more extended daily wear improving efficacy. Future long-term investigations are warranted for validation.
