Efficacy of rTMS for poststroke epilepsy and its effects on patients’ cognitive function and depressive status

This study investigates the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in treating poststroke epilepsy, addressing its impact on cognitive function and depressive status in 121 patients with mild cognitive impairment and depression. Patients were divided into an rTMS treatment group and a control group. Results indicate that rTMS significantly reduces clinical seizures and epileptiform discharges, particularly in patients with specific brain lesions. Moreover, rTMS effectively improves cognitive impairment and mood disorders, with no observed increase in adverse effects. The findings suggest that low-frequency rTMS could serve as an adjunctive treatment for epilepsy, offering insights for cases with cognitive impairment and depression.
