The US FDA approved Teprotumumab, an inhibitor of the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R), for thyroid eye disease (TED) treatment in 2020. Initially tested on recent onset patients, subsequent real-world usage on long-term cases also showed efficacy. TED causes disfiguring changes and affects vision due to muscle dysfunction, leading to double vision and optic nerve pressure. Teprotumumab, even in cases where prior interventions failed or in stable, untreated patients, improved symptoms and reduced orbital changes, irrespective of disease duration or inflammation presence. This suggests its effectiveness in various TED cases, marking a significant development in treatment.
