The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) has increased among adolescents who are not trying to quit traditional cigarettes but are new users. E-cigs are composed of a battery and aerosol delivery system that contains propylene glycol/vegetable glycerin breakdown products, flavorings, and potentially nicotine or other additives. Manufacturers have adjusted the type of nicotine used in the liquid to make inhalation more appealing to younger users. The full spectrum of cardiovascular and cardiometabolic consequences of e-cig use is not yet fully understood, but data suggest that they can cause short- and long-term issues on cardiac function, vascular integrity, and cardiometabolic health. Understanding these effects is important for policymakers to inform the dangers of e-cig use.
