Elevated Gal-3 Biomarker Improves Stroke Risk Prediction in AF Patients

Elevated serum Gal-3 levels in patients with nonvalvular paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) significantly correlated with increased stroke risk. The study revealed that Gal-3 offered superior predictive capacity (AUC 0.748) compared to traditional stroke indices like CHA2DS2-VASc and BNP. Gal-3 demonstrated an incremental predictive value with a significant improvement in prediction accuracy, as shown by an IDI of 16.4% and an NRI of 34.7%. Incorporating Gal-3 into stroke risk assessments could improve the prediction of stroke in AF patients.
