Elevated Mortality Rate in Patients With Functional Seizures After Diagnosis and Referral

This study aimed to evaluate the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) in patients referred to a multidisciplinary clinic in the United States for the treatment of functional seizures. A retrospective review of electronic health records identified 700 patients (mean age 37 years, 78% female), followed by 1,329 patient-years. Eleven deaths occurred, resulting in a mortality rate of 8.2 per 1,000 patient-years and an SMR of 2.4 (95% confidence interval: 1.17–4.22). Notably, none of the identified causes of death were directly related to seizures. The findings suggest an elevated mortality risk in patients with functional seizures shortly after diagnosis and referral to treatment.
