Elucidating children’s understanding of brachial plexus birth injury

This study explored how children with brachial plexus birth injuries understand their condition and the implications for delivering medical information effectively. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight children and ten caregivers individually and as child-caregiver pairs. The findings revealed that children primarily grasped their injury through personal experiences related to the affected limb's movement and appearance rather than medical knowledge. Age, emotional readiness, and background knowledge influenced the children's ability to comprehend diagnostic and prognostic information. The study emphasizes the need for addressing functional and psychosocial concerns as a foundation for delivering medical information and assessing the emotional readiness of children with brachial plexus birth injuries.
