Plastic pollution is causing physical and chemical harm to the environment, wildlife, and humans. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including bisphenols (BPs) and phthalates, are commonly found in plastics and can lead to health problems related to the endocrine system, such as diabetes mellitus. Epidemiological, animal, and cellular studies have shown that exposure to BPs and phthalates can alter glucose regulation and impair the functioning of pancreatic β-cells, leading to dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and changes in key biochemical pathways. Therefore, decreasing plastic pollution and human exposure to EDCs is essential to prevent diabetes mellitus and other health problems.
