Endothelial response to type I interferon contributes to vasculopathy and fibrosis and predicts disease progression of systemic sclerosis.

The study revealed the significance of Type I interferon (IFN‐1) signatures in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients. Using single‐cell RNA sequencing, the study identified endothelial cells (EC) as having the most prominent IFN‐1 signature among dermal non‐immune cells. The IFN‐1 signature was higher in dcSSc (diffuse cutaneous SSc) compared to lcSSc (limited cutaneous SSc) and controls. The study also found that IFN‐1 response protein, vascular MX1, could predict disease progression in SSc patients.
