Enhancing Tendon Repairs: An Exploration of Knots and Strands

The study aimed to compare tendon repair strength and gliding resistance using varying numbers of repair strands and square knots with a two-strand-overhand locking (TSOL) knot. Mechanical testing on isolated suture loops and 90 flexor digitorum profundus tendons from turkey digits revealed that increasing strands and square knots enhanced tensile strength and stiffness without significantly affecting tendon friction. Results suggest increasing strands improves overall repair strength, while additional square knots benefit two-strand repairs but not six-strand techniques.
