Enhancing the Efficacy of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in COVID-19–related Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been investigated as a potential therapy for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to their anti-inflammatory and tissue repair properties. This study explored the safety and efficacy of ORBCEL-C, an MSC product, in COVID-19-related ARDS patients. While the therapy demonstrated safety, it did not significantly improve oxygenation or mortality rates compared to placebo. Possible reasons for the negative outcome include the need for individualized dosing, the influence of the pulmonary microenvironment, and potential sex-specific effects.
