Epicardial Fat Linked to Renal and Cardiovascular Risks in Type 2 Diabetes

A post hoc analysis of the EPIDIAB study found that epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) volume was significantly associated with chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, and elevated coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores in patients with type 2 diabetes. The study involved 1,253 patients, predominantly men with a median age of 61. EAT volume was notably higher in patients with these macrovascular complications but showed no association with diabetic retinopathy or peripheral neuropathy. A subgroup of young women with high BMI and a lower duration of diabetes displayed high EAT volumes but had a null CAC score, suggesting a distinct inflammatory profile. These findings indicate that fully automated EAT quantification could be a valuable marker for assessing renal and macrovascular risks in type 2 diabetes patients.
