Epigenetics in developmental defects of enamel: A scoping review

This study summarizes the role of epigenetics in normal enamel formation and the occurrence of developmental defects of enamel (DDE). The review includes 22 studies that demonstrate how epigenetic factors can activate or silence genes that regulate biological activities such as cell proliferation, differentiation, enamel secretion, and mineralization during the amelogenesis process. Alterations to epigenetic modification can lead to disturbed enamel quantity and quality, resulting in DDE. The study concludes that epigenetics provides a new perspective for predicting and managing DDE.
