Estimating the association between systemic Interleukin-6 and mortality in the dialysis population

A new systematic review and meta-analysis focusing on dialysis patients reveals a strong connection between elevated Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and increased mortality risk. Out of 1886 citations analyzed, 60 were included in qualitative analyses, with 12 proceeding to meta-analysis. The pooled hazard ratio per pg/ml was 1.03 (95% CI 1.01, 1.03), indicating a significant 81% increased mortality risk. A subset analysis of seven articles with non-adjusted data showed a similar result: 1.03 per pg/ml (95% CI: 1.03, 1.06), a 92% increased risk. Heterogeneity was observed, possibly due to differing study populations, emphasizing the concerning link between systemic IL-6 levels and survival in dialysis patients.
