Evaluating the Population-Wide Feasibility of One-Dose HPV Vaccination in Underprivileged Regions

A new study suggests that one-dose vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) could effectively and efficiently prevent cervical cancers. Mathematical modelling indicates that one-dose routine vaccination for girls aged 9, with a multi-age cohort vaccination of girls aged 10–14, could prevent 12 million cervical cancers in India, 4.7 million in Nigeria, 2.3 million in Uganda, and 0.4 million in Vietnam over a century. The study shows that one-dose vaccination could avert most cancers compared to two-dose vaccination, given a protection duration of 20–30 years. This approach could save doses, allowing vaccination of more individuals, potentially even extending to boys and older age groups.
