Evaluation of a retinal oximetry image quality indicator in patients with cataract

A new automated retinal oximetry image quality indicator's efficacy was assessed using cataract patients as a model. 61 eyes were examined using the Oxymap T1 Retinal Oximeter, with 25 eyes re-evaluated after cataract surgery. Image quality correlated with cataract severity and improved after surgery. Lower image quality (less than 3) resulted in failed vessel detection in retinal oximetry. Higher quality images corresponded with higher retinal oxygen saturation measurements. The study suggests that image quality declines with cataract severity improves after surgery and impacts retinal oximetry accuracy. A quantitative quality indicator highlights the threshold for discarding optically poor images, emphasizing its role in future analyses.
