Evaluation of implants in smoking and non-smoking patients with peri-implant disease risk analysis and esthetic scores

The study investigated the impact of smoking on esthetics, peri-implant health, and disease risk in patients with dental implants. Analyzing 298 implants in systemically healthy patients aged 38 to 62, the study found significant differences in disease risk scores between smokers and nonsmokers. Those with peri-implantitis exhibited higher risk assessment scores. The dental implant health scale showed a significant difference in disease likelihood, with a 100% success rate for non-smokers. Additionally, smokers had narrower keratinized gingiva. The findings suggest that smoking poses a risk to dental implant survival, emphasizing the importance of cessation guidance from dentists.
