Evolution and outcomes of aortic dilations in giant cell arteritis

A retrospective study analyzed 47 giant cell arteritis (GCA) patients with aortic dilation, observing progression patterns over ≥2 imaging scans. Aortic dilation progression categorized as fast-progressive (FP), slow progressive (SP), or not progressive (NP). FP patients (28%) showed a higher association with atheromatous disease, with more statin and antiplatelet use. Aortitis patients (57%) mostly developed dilation in inflammatory segments. FP patients undergoing aortic surgery showed active vasculitis. The study highlights the role of aortic inflammation and atheromatous disease in rapid aortic dilation progression in GCA.
