Recent gene therapy breakthroughs have restored hearing in children with inherited deafness. Studies from China and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia demonstrate significant hearing improvements in several children. While currently targeting a rare condition caused by mutations in the otoferlin gene, scientists believe gene therapy could eventually aid many children with various genetic forms of deafness, affecting up to 60% of cases globally. The therapy involves delivering a functional gene copy to the inner ear, enhancing sound transmission.
