Experts Call for More Support and Research on Caregiver-Mediated Autism Interventions

A commentary on caregiver-mediated autism interventions, inspired by Brown et al.’s 2024 study on Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs), underscores the importance of equipping caregivers to support autistic children’s social communication. Commending Brown et al.'s focus on caregiver skills, the authors call for research into supports to mitigate caregiver challenges and optimize intervention delivery. Six recommendations are presented, advocating for caregiver resources, diverse and equitable sampling, real-world community settings, adaptive intervention designs, foundational principles, and strategies to improve NDBI dissemination. These recommendations aim to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of caregiver-mediated autism interventions.
