A scoping review of literature on the use of social media in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) reveals that social media is being used for patient education, professional networking, study recruitment, and obtaining cross-sectional data. However, there is a lack of well-controlled studies to determine the benefits and limitations of social media in these various applications. The review also shows that social media use in OHNS is increasing rapidly, with Facebook being the most commonly used platform for study recruitment, YouTube for patient education, and Twitter for professional networking. The authors recommend higher levels of evidence to fully understand the impact of social media in healthcare, particularly in applications that directly affect patient care.
